Lifting the Rear: Understanding Suspension Droop
The Rivian R1 has substantial rear suspension travel. As the vehicle is lifted, the suspension extends—or droops—before the rear tire leaves the ground.
With a stationary-base jack, such as a bottle or scissor jack, this suspension movement can cause the jack to begin leaning as the lifting point moves relative to the jack base.
The Double-Pump Method
If the jack begins to lean:
- Stop lifting.
- Lower the vehicle slightly to remove the load from the jack.
- Reposition the jack so it is centered and vertical beneath the puck.
- Resume lifting while watching the jack and puck alignment.
- Repeat if necessary as the rear suspension continues to extend.
Never continue lifting with a jack that is visibly leaning or improperly centered beneath the puck.
Why More Rear Lift Height Is Needed
The rear suspension has more travel than the front, so raising the body several inches does not immediately raise the rear tire by the same amount. This is why rear tire service may require a jack with greater lifting range than front tire service.
The goal is simple: keep the jack centered, stable, and properly aligned with the puck throughout the lift.

What Do I Need for Tire Service?
You don't need to work on your own Rivian to benefit from carrying jack pucks.

Are Tesla pucks compatible with my Rivian?
No. Tesla and Rivian use different lifting-point designs and interfaces. A jack puck should be engineered for the vehicle's designated lifting point—not simply fit approximately.

Why the Torin Big Red 10T Bottle Jack? Can I use another brand?
We use the Torin Big Red 10-Ton Bottle Jack with our own Rivians because its approximately 1.275" top hat fits inside the JackPucks 1.30" receiving port.
Other bottle jacks may also work, but top-hat diameters and jack heights vary by manufacturer. There is no universal bottle-jack saddle size. Before lifting, confirm that the jack fits securely within the puck's receiving port and that you have adequate clearance under the vehicle.
For rear tire service, remember that the R1's substantial suspension travel requires more lifting height than the front. A higher-lift floor jack or additional appropriate lift height may be necessary.
The key isn't the brand of jack—it's proper fit, adequate lift range, and a stable interface with the puck.

Why does JackPucks use a full GripTech™ rubber cap instead of a small traction ring?
We designed GripTech™ to provide a large, high-grip contact surface between the puck and the jack saddle, rather than relying on a narrow rubber ring.
The removable cap incorporates 48 high-traction contact points across the lifting surface, helping resist lateral movement while also reducing direct metal-to-metal contact between the aluminum puck and jack saddle.

Should I get the XL puck too?
The standard 4-pack is the right choice for routine tire rotations, shop lifts, and everyday service.
The XL Magnetic Jack Puck is designed for situations where additional lift height and a larger jack interface are useful—particularly roadside tire changes, off-road situations, and lifting the rear of the R1, where the suspension has substantial travel.
We keep both the standard 4-pack and an XL puck in our own Rivians so we're equipped for routine service as well as unexpected roadside situations.

A Note About Rear Lift Height
The Rivian R1 has substantial rear suspension travel, so lifting the rear wheel clear of the ground requires considerably more vertical travel than lifting the front.
For our own Rivians, we use lifting equipment with sufficient range for the job. Always use an appropriately rated, stable lifting setup and follow the jack manufacturer's instructions.
Floor Jacks for Additional Lift Height
Because the Rivian R1 has substantial rear suspension travel, maximum lift height matters when choosing a floor jack, particularly for rear tire service.
For our own Rivians, we look for a properly rated floor jack with generous lifting range. Two options commonly used for this type of work are:
